Senior Data Scientist

Why is this job for you?

We have developed the Pattern Discovery Engine™ which discovers patterns in big data. These pattern discoveries will significantly and positively impact people’s lives and provide industry with new insights on factors directly impacting their businesses. Our initial work is in the biomedical space, focusing on identifying the patterns related to breast cancer, ovarian cancer, as well as diseases such as Chron’s disease. We are also working in the space of energy, aviation, mining, and environmental science. This job is for you because we are taking on what has been viewed as intractable problems. We learn daily from each other in the space of mathematics, machine learning, data science bioinformatics and biology, each who are experts in their fields, typically working at or beyond the state of the art. Learning, sharing ideas, and synthesizing information is our passion. Making a positive impact by combining leading-edge research with emerging technologies is our mission. That’s why we are here. We’ll take on additional domains such as finance, transportation, etc. as time and resources allow.

You are well suited for this job because you have experience working with large data sets. You can scan the data sets and identify the specific nature of the data. You identify the shape of the data along with the sparsity, density, and note inconsistencies. You are curious about the insights that lie within. You see empty values and wonder it means – is that zero, or some other indicator? You are familiar with the challenges of ingesting new data sets. You take a certain pride in knowing how to resolve missing values and noise in the dataset while retaining the signal strength. Most importantly, you know that many of these datasets contain data that can be used to solve some of the hardest challenges in their respective industries. Success here can mean positive outcomes for people, projects and processes while discovering new methods and insights in discovering patterns and providing results with measurable impact.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work directly with other (in-house or external) industry experts to expand your own abilities and develop novel methods. You will learn new approaches to data science as well as learning the adjacent areas in which you are working. Mathematics, machine learning, causality, bioinformatics, biology, mining, energy, aerospace, material science are current or future areas of pattern discovery.
  • Work closely with our bioinformaticians and experts in computer science to understand their data ingestion techniques, data validation and noise reduction filters. You will play an integral part in working with the bioinformaticians on methods to improve the result sets. Likely collaborating and iterating with the mathematicians, bioinformaticians and computer scientists. • Work closely with our/other mathematicians to collaborate on the algorithmic approaches to understanding and refining the dataset. Techniques will likely include dimensional reduction using various established and novel algorithms. You will want to understand the datasets, the metadata and how the algorithms and hyperparameters affect the data and the relationships within the dataset.
  • You are a data and algorithms expert, guiding our thinking, creating our data handling practices, and the person in the company working closely with the partners providing the datasets to the company; finding methods to improve the quality of the source data, and working with the domain experts to evaluate and understand the result sets.
  • You will be selecting methods to condition the data, assist in determining where statistical and other mathematical methods may best be used in the data processing stages to improve the result sets.
  • We have developed an in-house tool, the Dimensional Navigator, which provides graphical insights up to 8 dimensions. We wish to productize that offering to our customers. You will be a key person in driving and extending that capabilities in meaningful ways to gain understating in the relationships between and within the data covariates.
  • Collaborate across the product management, science, engineering, program management teams to understand the needs of the various teams. Identify best practices in our data handling and processing methods to have implemented as reusable libraries in pattern discovery, detection and recognition.
  • Participate in the company roadmap planning. Key areas of research, investment, and aspirational thinking.

Required Qualifications:

  • Masters (with at least 7 years’ experience) or PhD in Applied Math, Statistics or Computer Science.
  • 7+ years practical experience with SAS, ETL, data processing, database programming and data analytics.
  • Extensive background in data mining and statistical analysis.
  • Able to understand various data structures and data transformation methods.
  • Excellent pattern recognition and predictive modeling skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for coordinating across internal and external teams.
  • Experience programming in Python or R.
  • A passion to learn and master new technologies and techniques.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in developing pattern discovery methods.
  • A strong background in and sense of adventure in the realm of Mathematics.
  • Knowledge of a variety of machine learning techniques (clustering, decision tree learning, artificial neural networks, deep learning).
  • Experience in causal algorithms and understanding.
  • Experience in VR and 3D (or more) visualization of datasets
  • C++ programming experience.

What is Pattern Computer?

Pattern Computer is a 5-year-old Seattle-area startup focused on discovering patterns in complex, high dimension datasets. We go far beyond the current machine learning techniques of neural networks focused on pattern recognition – seeing what is already known. More importantly, we are a committed, collaborative team breaking new ground in machine learning.

Among our discoveries, we have discovered patterns behind breast cancer and successfully passed four rounds of laboratory testing. We have recently developed a highly accurate method for detecting the presence of COVID-19 in 15 seconds. Along with the discoveries, we have published results which are more accurate than current, peer-reviewed academic papers, not only exceeding their results but have also documented the mathematical algorithms which describe the pattern.

This is a collaborative team focused on learning and developing new methods to solve problems; write distributed, high performance code for heterogenous system architecture and solve challenging problems with positive social impact and high value. We want to reward the team members and investors by creating high value business opportunities and long-term customer relationships. While our main offices are in the Redmond area, team members primarily live in Redmond, Seattle, and the surrounding rural communities. Team members may work from home 2-3 days a week, depending on project status and meeting schedules, with the balance in the Redmond office. Our focus is on building outstanding leading-edge products, having a great, collaborative team environment, and balancing that with fun and learning. Our team consists of many industry and domain experts; the collaborative learning and sharing environment is one of our keys to success.

This position reports to the Senior Mathematition.
This position is in Redmond, Washington. Travel is minimal, less than 25%.
Pattern Computer is an equal-opportunity employer.
